Permit Information

Under the 2026 USFS EXPLORE Act rule, general Superior NF has no permit for groups of 5 or fewer, free de minimis for 6 to 8, Special Use Permit for 9+. However, BWCAW itself is designated wilderness with its own mandatory entry permit system (quota based) required regardless of group size. Canoe required for most access.

Planning Your Day at Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

One-Spot Day

BWCAW one spot days mean picking an entry point and paddling to the nearest beautiful campsite. This is not a drive up destination, the ceremony is the canoe trip. Seagull Lake from Entry Point 54 is the easiest for a one day turnaround, no portages to reach most sites. Kawishiwi Falls from Entry Point 32 is the shortest paddle (about a mile) and gets you to a waterfall quickly. Budget the whole day including gear pickup, shuttle, paddle in, ceremony, paddle out.

Ceremony + Portraits Split

Splitting a ceremony across locations in the BWCA means multiple lake crossings or portages, which is a real expedition rather than a photography day. Most couples pick one lake and build the day around it. The exception is couples who make it a multi day trip, ceremony one day, portraits and camping the next. Group size is capped at 9 regardless of entry point.

A Note on Light

Northern Minnesota in summer has long daylight, sunrise around 5am and sunset after 9pm in June. Mist rising from the lakes at dawn is the signature frame, plan an early start. Calm water for reflections is most common morning and evening, wind picks up midday. Fall color peaks mid to late September, tamarack gold against dark water. Clear nights in late summer and fall give Milky Way visibility and occasional northern lights.
