Planning Your Day at Devil's Lake State Park

One-Spot Day

Devil's Lake one spot days work either on the water or on the bluffs, not both. For accessible ceremonies the South Shore beach area and the Chateau are flat, permitted, and guest friendly. For adventure couples the South Bluff with Balanced Rock and Devil's Doorway is the signature frame but requires a 500 foot climb. Pick based on who is in the party and whether the bluff weather is cooperating.

Ceremony + Portraits Split

The park is large but most ceremony sites cluster around the lake, South Shore and Chateau on one end, North Shore and Tumbled Rocks on the other, with bluff trails climbing from both sides. A ceremony at the South Shore beach and portraits on the bluff the same afternoon is very realistic. Couples with mixed mobility sometimes do ceremony at the Chateau and send the photographer up the bluff with the couple alone afterward.

A Note on Light

The bluffs run north south and the lake sits between them, so morning light hits the west bluff and evening light hits the east bluff. Plan bluff portraits based on which side you want lit. Calm mornings on the lake produce mirror reflections of the opposite bluff, the signature Devil's Lake frame. Fall foliage peaks mid to late October and the quartzite glows purple and brown in autumn light. The lake can get windy by afternoon which kills reflections, so sunrise is the hour if still water matters.
