Permit Information
Under the 2026 USFS EXPLORE Act rule: no permit needed for groups of 5 or fewer, free de minimis authorization for 6 to 8, Special Use Permit for 9+. Most elopements fall in the no permit tier. Dolly Sods is designated wilderness, so leave no trace and group size limits (typically 10) apply separate from permit rules.
Planning Your Day at Dolly Sods Wilderness, Monongahela National Forest
One-Spot Day
Dolly Sods is a one spot day by access. Bear Rocks at the north end of Forest Road 75 is the sunrise option, wind sculpted sandstone on open heath with unobstructed eastern views. Lion's Head is the adventure option, a 5 mile round trip through bog and barren to a cliff above Red Creek canyon. The access road is rough gravel, high clearance vehicle strongly recommended. Plan for no services inside the wilderness, nearest towns are Davis or Thomas, 30 plus minutes away.
Ceremony + Portraits Split
Splits only work if both parties are fit. Bear Rocks is a 10 minute drive from the Red Creek trailhead for Lion's Head, so some couples ceremony at Bear Rocks at sunrise and portrait at Lion's Head later in the day. The Wilderness group size cap is 10 including officiant and photographer, strictly enforced. Under the USFS 2026 rule most elopements of 8 or fewer need no permit at all.
A Note on Light
Sunrise at Bear Rocks is the signature light window, the eastern views are unobstructed. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast at elevation in summer, plan morning ceremonies. Fall color in the blueberry barrens peaks mid to late October, rust red and gold across the open heath. Wind is constant at 4,000 feet, pack layers even in July and embrace it for movement in fabric. The access road closes periodically for snow and ice from late fall through early spring.
