Planning Your Day at Finger Lakes Region, Watkins Glen State Park
One-Spot Day
Finger Lakes one spot days work best inside the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail for the cathedral feel or at a Seneca Lake overlook for the wide water view. The gorge is a 2 mile walk with 832 stairs, not a single standing location, so a ceremony inside the gorge is really a ceremony plus portrait walk in one. Overlook ceremonies stay in one place.
Ceremony + Portraits Split
The Finger Lakes region spreads across five lakes and a dozen gorge parks within roughly 60 minutes of each other. Watkins Glen is the headliner, but Taughannock Falls (215 feet tall) and Letchworth (the Grand Canyon of the East) are each a separate destination worth their own day. Most couples pick one gorge park and one lake overlook and build the day between them.
A Note on Light
The gorge interior stays naturally dark and shaded, overcast days give the most even light and the richest green on the moss walls. A fast lens or tripod helps. Lake overlooks face west across Seneca, so late afternoon through sunset is the golden window and the vineyard hills catch warm side light. Fall foliage peaks early to mid October across the region.
