Permit Information
NPS Special Use Permit required for any wedding or organized ceremony at the Florida or Mississippi units. Submit the application at least two weeks before the ceremony, though 60 days is strongly recommended for popular weekends. The application fee is set through the park's annual cost recovery analysis, so call the permit office at 850 934 2600 for the current amount. Events cannot block other visitor access and must not impair resources. Guests also pay the standard park entrance fee.
Planning Your Day at Gulf Islands National Seashore
One-Spot Day
Gulf Islands one spot days work best at Fort Pickens Langdon Beach where the brick fort and the open Gulf sit within a few minutes of each other, or at Opal Beach where the unbuilt dune coast runs in both directions. Both give you ceremony and portraits in the same golden hour window without driving. Ship Island is a full day offshore trip governed by the ferry schedule.
Ceremony + Portraits Split
The Seashore stretches across two states, Florida units cluster around Pensacola and the Mississippi units center on Ship Island off Gulfport, 12 miles offshore. Trying to combine Florida and Mississippi in a single day is not realistic. Within the Florida units, Fort Pickens and Opal Beach are 20 minutes apart and make a natural two location day.
A Note on Light
White quartz sand reflects a lot of light, midday is brutally bright and washes skin tones, a polarizer helps. Morning ceremonies on the east facing Gulf beaches catch the best soft light. Sunset on the Sound side of Opal Beach gives you calm water and warm sky with no direct sun. Hurricane season runs June through November, book spring or fall for the safest weather window.
