Permit Information
Under the 2026 USFS EXPLORE Act rule, the general White River NF has no permit requirement for groups of 5 or fewer, free de minimis authorization for 6 to 8, and Special Use Permit for 9+. However, Hanging Lake itself requires a timed entry reservation permit year round (very limited daily capacity), and ceremonies are NOT allowed at the lake itself. The hiking permit is required regardless of group size.
Planning Your Day at Hanging Lake, White River National Forest
One-Spot Day
Hanging Lake one spot days are the only option. The trail is a 2.4 mile roundtrip climb to the lake and the boardwalk at the top forbids formal ceremonies because the travertine is too fragile for crowds. Most couples hike up, exchange quiet vows at the boardwalk with 6 people maximum, walk the 0.2 mile spur to Spouting Rock, and descend. The whole trip is 4 to 5 hours including the shuttle from Glenwood Springs.
Ceremony + Portraits Split
Hanging Lake does not split, because the site does not host formal ceremonies anywhere on it. The NPS and USFS prohibit full ceremony events at the lake boardwalk due to travertine fragility, so what happens here is a private vow moment for the two of you plus an officiant or photographer. The legal ceremony happens elsewhere. Couples often pair Hanging Lake with a formal ceremony at Maroon Bells Amphitheatre two hours south or a different White River NF spot on a different day.
A Note on Light
The narrow canyon keeps Hanging Lake in shade for most of the day, which is actually what you want. Overcast saturates the turquoise water and reveals the travertine color. Direct sun bounces hard off the water and blows out detail. Morning shuttle slots (first is usually 7am) get you there before midday heat. Spouting Rock sprays heavily, so bring a lens cloth. The trail closes roughly December through early March for ice.
