Permit Information

Managed by USDA Forest Service as part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Under current USFS Region 6 guidance, ceremonies with fewer than 75 guests generally do not require a Special Use Permit, but this site is so heavily trafficked that couples should plan for sunrise or very early morning to avoid visitor crowds. Separately, a timed use parking permit is required for the I 84 lot from late May through early September ($2.00 transaction fee via Recreation.gov). No confetti, ri…

Planning Your Day at Multnomah Falls

One-Spot Day

Multnomah Falls is 30 minutes east of Portland on I 84, exit 31 eastbound only (there is no westbound exit, use exit 35 and double back). The falls plus Benson Bridge plus the historic Multnomah Falls Lodge all sit within a 0.2 mile paved trail. Arrive at 6am in summer for sunrise before the timed use parking permit window kicks in at 9am and the visitor crowd lands. Ceremony at the base viewpoint or Benson Bridge, coffee at the lodge, then continue east on the Historic Columbia River Highway to Latourell, Wahkeena, or Horsetail Falls for additional portrait stops. The whole Gorge waterfall corridor is 10 miles.

Ceremony + Portraits Split

Two ceremony zones at Multnomah, both narrow and heavily trafficked. The base viewpoint holds up to 10 guests standing, the paved plaza in front of the lodge. Benson Bridge holds up to 6 because the bridge is 8 feet wide. Anything bigger needs to overflow onto the lodge lawn or move to a less crowded Gorge site entirely. Latourell Falls (4 miles west) and Wahkeena Falls (1 mile west) are both quieter alternatives with similar waterfall backdrops.

A Note on Light

Spring (April through May) has the strongest flow, the most mist, and the lushest green on the canyon walls. Winter produces ice formations if temperatures drop below freezing for several days. Summer sees heaviest crowds and requires the $2 timed use parking permit via Recreation.gov from late May through early September. Overcast days are ideal for waterfall photography, no harsh shadows. Mist is constant at Benson Bridge, bring lens cloths and expect everything to get damp.
