Planning Your Day at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

One-Spot Day

Porcupine Mountains one spot days work well at Lake of the Clouds Overlook for the signature view, a short ADA accessible walk from the main lot. The overlook holds 20 and is the most guest friendly site in the park. Presque Isle River Waterfalls is the adventure option, a 2.5 mile waterfall loop ending at Lake Superior. Summit Peak Observation Tower is the third designated ceremony site. Pick based on accessibility needs.

Ceremony + Portraits Split

The park is large, about 60,000 acres, and the main ceremony sites are spread across it. Lake of the Clouds and Summit Peak are both near the eastern entrance off M 107, about 15 minutes apart. Presque Isle is on the far west end of the park, 40 minutes from the Lake of the Clouds area via County Road 519. A ceremony at Lake of the Clouds and portraits at Summit Peak the same day is realistic. Splitting east and west sections in a single day is tight.

A Note on Light

Lake of the Clouds faces north and west, so late afternoon into sunset is the prime window for light across the valley. Early morning calm water produces the best fall color reflections, peak mid to late September through early October. Presque Isle River runs through deep volcanic gorge, shaded all day, overcast is ideal for waterfall work. Lake Superior at the river mouth catches full sun all day and can feel exposed, golden hour is best. Winter snow closes most park roads.
