Rhode Island Coast, Beavertail and Cliff Walk
Rhode Island · State Park · Northeast Region
Beavertail is the southernmost tip of Conanicut Island at the mouth of Narragansett Bay, a rocky Atlantic headland with a historic lighthouse (built 1749) and waves breaking on basalt shore. The Cliff Walk in Newport is 3.5 miles of oceanfront cliffs with the Atlantic on one side and the Gilded Age mansions (The Breakers, Marble House) set back on the other. Both locations offer a distinctly New England coastal character that is hard to replicate anywhere else in the region.

Permit Information
Beavertail State Park (RI DEM) requires a Special Use Permit for groups of 50+. Scaled fee system: $200 for 101 to 200 people, higher for larger groups. Groups under 50 do not need a permit for small personal ceremonies. Newport's Cliff Walk is a public easement under Rhode Island law, small personal ceremonies do not require a permit. Commercial photographers on state property may require a permit. Contact RI DEM at 401 884 2010.
Seasonal Planning
June through September is the reliable window. Fall (September through October) is excellent, warm enough for comfort but with thinning crowds. Winter storms make Beavertail genuinely dramatic.
Planning Your Day at Rhode Island Coast, Beavertail and Cliff Walk
One-Spot Day
Beavertail State Park can carry the whole day from a single loop road. Ceremony at the southernmost granite shelf with the 1856 lighthouse in frame, then portraits at a quieter pullout down the loop as the Atlantic breaks below. One address, four scenic pullouts, and the full rocky Rhode Island coast.
Ceremony + Portraits Split
Hold the ceremony at Fort Adams North Lawn with Narragansett Bay and the Pell Bridge as your backdrop, then drive fifteen minutes to the Cliff Walk Forty Steps for portraits with Gilded Age mansions on one side and the Atlantic on the other. Two of Newport's most iconic views in one evening.
A Note on Light
Sunrise sends warm pink light straight across the Atlantic and onto the east facing cliffs and Forty Steps. Late afternoon into golden hour lights the mansions and the Pell Bridge. Overcast actually works in your favor along the coast, the granite and sea gain saturation without blown highlights.
