Shawnee National Forest, Garden of the Gods
Illinois · National Forest · Midwest Region
Shawnee's Garden of the Gods is a sandstone rock garden in southern Illinois, ancient formations with names like Camel Rock and Anvil Rock, surrounded by dense hardwood forest that erupts in color each fall. The Observation Trail is a paved 0.25 mile loop to the main overlook, accessible for all fitness levels. The Illinois Ozarks feel genuinely different from the rest of the state: rugged, forested, and surprisingly wild. An underrated gem within a day's drive of Chicago, St. Louis, and Nashville.

Planning Your Day at Shawnee National Forest, Garden of the Gods
One-Spot Day
The Garden of the Gods Observation Trail can carry the whole day. The 0.25 mile flagstone loop puts Camel Rock, Anvil Rock, and Devils Smokestack within easy reach of every guest, and the main overlook serves as both altar and portrait set. One short loop delivers every signature frame in the recreation area.
Ceremony + Portraits Split
Hold the ceremony at Rim Rock on the quieter CCC stonework bluffs where you can spread out, then drive three miles east to Garden of the Gods for portraits at Camel Rock as the light shifts. Two dramatic Shawnee bluff experiences on one permit free afternoon.
A Note on Light
Sunset is the money hour. West facing overlooks light the sandstone on fire and turn the Shawnee Hills forest amber. Fall color peaks in late October and blankets the valleys below the bluffs in orange. Overcast days are ideal for portraits on the rock textures without harsh shadows.
