Planning Your Day at Black Balsam Knob, Pisgah National Forest
One-Spot Day
The Black Balsam area is a cluster of three ceremony options off the same FR 816 trailhead at Blue Ridge Parkway MP 420.2. Black Balsam summit itself for the signature 360 degree bald at 6,214 feet, Sam Knob meadow for a quieter twin peak with a wildflower approach, or Graveyard Fields Upper Falls for an accessible waterfall plus meadow setting with no summit climb. Pick based on mobility and privacy needs. Parking fills by mid morning on summer weekends, arrive before 8am.
Ceremony + Portraits Split
Splits flow cleanly inside the trailhead cluster. Ceremony at Black Balsam summit at sunrise, walk the Art Loeb ridgeline toward Tennent Mountain for portraits, then drive 2 miles down the Parkway to Graveyard Fields for a waterfall portrait set. Under the USFS 2026 rule, groups of 8 or fewer need no permit. Inside the Shining Rock Wilderness the hard cap is 10 people total including officiant and photographer, no exceptions, no arches, no decor, no amplified sound.
A Note on Light
Golden hour on the balds is legendary. The open summit catches light from every direction for warm sidelight at sunrise and long silhouettes at sunset. Cloud inversions in the valleys below are common at dawn, arrive an hour before sunrise for the best shot at them. Late May through October is the season, peak wildflowers mid June to early July, peak fall color early to mid October. Blue Ridge Parkway and FR 816 close mid November through March for snow and ice.
