Planning Your Day at Hanging Rock State Park

One-Spot Day

Hanging Rock is a compact park where every ceremony option sits inside a 15 minute drive of the visitor center. The summit is the exposure option, a 2.4 mile round trip to a quartzite cliff with Piedmont and Pilot Mountain views. Upper Cascades is the sheltered option, a 0.7 mile walk to a rhododendron grotto waterfall. Pick based on mobility and weather, the summit is brutal in afternoon heat or wind, the falls are forgiving in almost any conditions.

Ceremony + Portraits Split

Splits between summit and falls work cleanly. Ceremony at the falls in the morning when the grotto is quiet and shaded, drive 10 minutes to the summit trailhead, hike up for afternoon portraits with the Piedmont lit below. The NC State Parks Special Activity Permit covers both sites, $70 for up to 60 guests, submit at least 14 days ahead. Call 336 593 8480 to confirm your intended ceremony areas on the application.

A Note on Light

The summit faces east for sunrise and the Piedmont catches the first warm light below, a signature Hanging Rock frame. Upper Cascades sits in a deep gorge where direct sun rarely reaches, which means overcast days are actually the better weather for the falls. Spring rhododendron bloom peaks early to mid May, fall foliage peaks late October. Wind on the summit is constant, plan veil and fabric around it.
