Brown County State Park
Indiana · State Park · Midwest Region
Brown County is called the 'Little Smokies' because its rolling hardwood ridges and misty hollows genuinely resemble the Great Smoky Mountains at a smaller scale. The fall color here is among the best in the Midwest, sugar maples, red oaks, and sassafras turn the ridges brilliant orange and crimson in October. The artist colony town of Nashville, Indiana sits right outside the park entrance, making it a full destination rather than just a park stop.

Planning Your Day at Brown County State Park
One-Spot Day
Hesitation Point Overlook carries the whole day. The CCC stone shelter sits 50 feet from the rail as a built in altar with a rain plan, and the view of rolling Hoosier hills changes by the minute as the light shifts. One parking loop, one overlook, and a full sweep of the Brown County landscape.
Ceremony + Portraits Split
Hold the ceremony at Hesitation Point with the Hoosier hills rolling to the horizon, then move down to Ogle Lake for portraits beside mirror still water framed by oak and hickory. Two moods of the same park in one short afternoon.
A Note on Light
Mid October is the single best window in the entire state, when the sugar maples, red oaks, and sassafras turn the ridges brilliant orange and crimson. Late afternoon rakes warm side light across the ridgelines; sunrise backlights the color. Spring dogwood and redbud bloom is the runner up.
