Smith Rock State Park
Oregon · State Park · Pacific Northwest Region
Smith Rock is 550 foot volcanic tuff towers rising from the Crooked River canyon, surrounded by high desert sage and rimrock. Misery Ridge Trail climbs to a view with the formations below, the Cascades behind you (Hood, Jefferson, Three Sisters on a clear day), and the river glinting far below. The Monkey Face, a 350 foot pillar with a summit that looks exactly like a human profile, is one of the recognizable rock formations in the country. Completely different from the PNW forests 90 minutes west.

Planning Your Day at Smith Rock State Park
One-Spot Day
Smith Rock ceremonies are restricted to the amphitheater only due to site degradation, so one spot days happen by default. The amphitheater holds 50 total including couple, vendors, and guests. Portraits can move to Misery Ridge Summit or the Crooked River Loop afterward, both within the park. Start ceremonies early morning in summer, the canyon hits 90 to 100 degrees by midday.
Ceremony + Portraits Split
Oregon State Parks permits the ceremony at the amphitheater only, so ceremony splits are not available at Smith Rock. Portraits can move freely to Misery Ridge (3.7 miles roundtrip with 1,340 feet of gain) or the Crooked River Loop (3.9 mile flat riverside loop). Most couples do ceremony at the amphitheater then a portrait hike or river walk, same day, same permit.
A Note on Light
Morning light hits the west faces of the towers first, 6 to 9am is prime for the signature orange gold glow on the volcanic tuff. Misery Ridge Summit gives wide shots over the river and Cascade volcano views on clear mornings. Crooked River Loop at river level provides strong upward angles and late afternoon turns the tuff deep orange red. Spring (April through June) and fall (September through October) are ideal, summer in the canyon regularly hits triple digits.
